Abstract：
Many postgraduate students (especially junior postgraduate students) are struggling to write research papers. Although many postgraduate students have solid backgrounds and are passionate about conducting research, some of them have made no progress on submitting papers for several months. (or even years), causing anxiety. Worse still, the more anxiety they experience, the less they submit, which further creates a vicious cycle. Ultimately, they may leave the academia forever, leading to a loss of talents. However, the main reason for those students to make no progress is that they may initially have wrong mindsets for academic writing. In this talk, I will discuss (1) how to find/motivate a research topic, (2) how to clearly describe a research problem, (3) how to discuss state-of-the-art research work, (4) how to present solutions, (5) how to present experiment studies, and (6) how to conclude a research work and find future work with good quality.

Tsz Nam Chan (Edison) is currently a Distinguished Professor in the database group of the Big Data Institute at Shenzhen University (SZU). His research interests are mainly in (1) spatiotemporal data management, (2) large-scale data visualization, and (3) large-scale geospatial analytics. He published several research papers in prestigious conferences and journals in both database and data mining areas, including SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, SIGKDD, and TKDE. Prior to joining the SZU, he was a Research Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong Baptist University from Sep 2020 to Aug 2023 and a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Hong Kong from Sep 2018 to Aug 2020. He received the PhD degree in computing and the BEng degree in electronic and information engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2019 and 2014, respectively. He is an IEEE senior member, an ACM member, and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas) in China (with age 32 at that time).
